Hey there.

Greater Than Both Faith & Fear

January 12 | Discipleship Guide

Be Real Together:

Take a few minutes to catch up, tell stories, and laugh together. Trust and friendship take time to build. If you’re launching a new DG, one person should tell their story — what do we need to know about you? Next week, have another person in your DG share their story.

Read Together: Matthew 14:22-36 CSB

This week, we explored the tension between faith and fear in the story of Peter walking on water. We often fixate on the faith it took Peter to step out of the boat or the fear that caused him to sink. But the focus of the story is greater: Jesus, the One in whom we can place our faith and give over our fears. His power and presence are greater than our circumstances, reminding us to seek first His Kingdom.

The One Question:
Ask this question at your family meal or Discipleship Group.

What does it mean for Jesus to be greater than both your faith and your fear, and how does that change how you respond to life’s storms?

Grow Together:
Use these questions to go deeper with your DG or for personal study.

  1. In Matthew 14, Peter’s fear caused him to falter, even in the midst of a miracle. How can this encourage us when our faith feels weak?
  2. Jesus said, “Take courage, it is I. Don’t be afraid.” How does focusing on who Jesus is (rather than your circumstances) help you navigate challenges?
  3. How can seeking God’s Kingdom first—above control, outcomes, or miracles—reshape your daily decisions and anxieties?

Pray Together:

Take time to pray with and for each other.

Suggested Prayer Prompts:
  • Thank Jesus for being greater than our faith and fear and for His constant presence in our lives.
  • Ask for courage to step out in faith and surrender fears, knowing He is trustworthy.
  • Lift up any storms or challenges group members are facing and trust Jesus to meet those needs.
