The Radical Compassion of Jesus

August 18 | Discipleship Guide

Be Real Together:

Take a few minutes to catch up, tell stories, and laugh together. Trust and friendship take time to build. If you’re launching a new DNA, one person should tell their story — what do we need to know about you? Next week, have another person in your DNA share their story.

Read Together: Mark 1:40-45 CSB

In this passage, a man with leprosy approaches Jesus with faith and humility, acknowledging Jesus' power to heal while submitting to His will. Jesus is moved with compassion, showing His willingness to heal and care for those who are suffering. The leprosy leaves the man, and he is healed. Jesus instructs the healed man to tell no one, but to follow the Mosaic Law by showing himself to the priest and making the required offerings, emphasizing the importance of obedience. Despite Jesus' command to keep the healing private, the man spreads the news, making it difficult for Jesus to enter towns openly, so He stays in more isolated areas, yet people still come to Him from everywhere.

The One Question:
Ask this question at your family meal or Discipleship Group.

How does the immediate healing of the leper demonstrate Jesus' authority and compassion?

Grow Together:
Use these questions to go deeper with your DG or for personal study.

1. What can we learn about the leper’s faith from his approach to Jesus?
2. How does the leper’s request, "If you are willing," reflect both faith and submission?
3. Why did Jesus instruct the man not to tell anyone about his healing?
4. What is the importance of Jesus telling the healed man to show himself to the priest and offer
sacrifices?
5. What might be the reasons behind the healed man disobeying Jesus' instruction to remain silent?
