“Should I be concerned/engaged with politics?”
October 27 | Discipleship Guide
Be Real Together:
Take a few minutes to catch up, tell stories, and laugh together. Trust and friendship take time to build. If you’re launching a new DG, one person should tell their story — what do we need to know about you? Next week, have another person in your DG share their story.
This last Sunday Pastor Sean challenged the belief that "Christians should avoid politics". To examine this idea, Sean held 5 cultural myths in front of us to engage the topic biblically. The first myth we addressed was "God doesn't care about politics", we were reminded that God cares about the organization of societies and how governing structures impact people, in fact God has been implementing the organization of humans since Genesis 1. The second myth covered was "Christians should stay in their lane and focus on the Gospel". Sean led us through several biblical & historical examples where God's people engaged with governance and called for justice, showing that faithful participation comes from our faith in God. The third myth addressed was "Separation of Church and state: Means keep church out of Politics", but we looked at the first amendment and the origin of the statement Separation of Church and state and learned the true meaning of this statement is to protect churches from Government. The fourth myth Sean addressed was "Jesus didn't engage political issues" which we learn isn't true , Jesus did address political issues he prioritized heavenly issues. While anything can become an idol(including politics) caring about government and voting does not equate to idolatry especially if we proceed with the truth that Christ sits on the throne. Lastly Sean encouraged those of us who have bought into the myth "my vote doesn't matter". 32 million Christians will abstain from voting this year, which is 10% of the nation, the truth is your vote does matter and it's gift we've been given to steward.
The One Question:
Ask this question at your family meal or Discipleship Group.
How does “Kingdom First” influence your view of political engagement?
Grow Together:
Use these questions to go deeper with your DG or for personal study.
1. What does it look like to love God first and then our neighbor with our political decisions?
2. Of the 5 myths addressed(see above) which one do you struggle with or have you struggled with?
3. In what areas of our culture do you think Christians have shrunk back from, and what areas of culture can you begin to influence for the glory of God?
Pray Together:
Take time to pray with and for each other.
